A
Flawless guitar on paper let down by flawed execution
Alfi27 04.10.2024
Bought this exact guitar first and foremost because I fell in love with the finish, but had looked at the DK24 model for some time to fill the purpose of a "shred guitar", that would hopefully inspire me to practice more with the intent towards becoming more technically proficient.

I'll try and be as objective as I can, meaning that I am not deducting any points because I personally find the neck profile way too thin, for instance. But I have to mention it, and while that is one of my biggest issues with the guitar, it's highly subjective.

A less subjective statement is that compared to my PRS SE Silver Sky, which is a cheaper guitar (and even comes with a decent gig bag), the Charvel DK24 came set up with much higher action, and overall does not have the same quality feel to it. The Charvel feels more raw/unfinished (as in, incomplete) almost like it left the factory in a hurry, and both have maple necks and fretboards (albeit roasted vs non-roasted) with a thin satin finish that feels like you're touching the raw wood, so it's not that. The Charvel also has a much flatter compound radius, so it should easily have been capable of even lower action than the SE Silver Sky.

The tremolo is one of the best features of this guitar though, and certainly better than the SE Silver Sky unit. Stays in tune very well, and has great feel and range. I think you're going to be pretty aggressive with the tremolo arm to justify the hassle of a Floyd Rose over this, but I'm not really a big tremolo guy so what do I know.

Tone wise it has absolutely superb range, I quite enjoy the 5 way switch and the additional series/parallel mini switch. Big fan of the no-load tone knob as well, which has a physical notch to indicate when it's bypassed. When run in series by themselves, the pickups are a bit unbalanced to me in tone, vibe and feel though. The bridge pickup is clearly a hotter and more modern beast than the neck, which may or may not be an issue for you. For me, who have more than enough gain in my amps, the Full Shred is on the hot side and a bit hard to tame.

I really love the finish and overall aesthetics, the finish is nicely applied with a great looking fade between the shades. Haven't weighed it, but weight feels good and light too. The biggest letdowns for me are the neck profile, which is way too skinny for me, and the overall feel and setup. I tried lowering the action, but I can't get it low enough for my liking without approaching buzz city.

Truth be told I expected a higher quality instrument than this for the price, shortly summarised it's a decent instrument with high quality hardware. Maybe a good luthier could fix the setup issues, but obviously he can't make the neck fatter without swapping it - so I'm probably returning the guitar.
