I had ordered them for home studio, critical listening and mixing. Wrong choice! My mistake as they are clearly not intended for that purpose. I decided to keep them for multimedia (more on that below). I then decided to invest in the AKG712pro for Homestudio. OMG, the difference is huge.
Back to the HD599:
There is some "bass bleed" that creates an unclear sound in other frequencies, especially the mids (sounds kind of muddy). Sound quality/price ratio is terrible on these. Hence three stars.
Plus side: very comfortable to wear, gorgeous look, quality built, low impedance (works for laptop, mp3 player, phones and such),
Unusable for home studio but, because of the comfort and acceptable sound for media purposes, they can fit the bill for someone who look for nice HP to listen to music in general (not for serious audiophiles, though.) Although I decided to keep them, I can not recommend these because the price is way too high for the performance they offer. You pay for the built quality, wearing comfort, the very nice look, the brand name and the relative utility (multimedia).
