I worked on the very commonly used Yamaha HS8 in our Studio.
We all felt the whole Lowmid / bass detail wasnt really cutting it.
We have a pretty dead room that is about 20m² big and is acustically treatet (although that is another rabbithole alltogether).
For me, proper replacements were the Adam A7X, the Neumann KH 120, Adam A77X and the Eve SC305.
of all the speakers the A7X stood up the longest against the sc305?s
but in the end, although lowmids and bass were the reason to start the search, Depth and stereospread ended it.
the 3 way design of the sc305 with the slightly smaller speakers seemed a little faster and more detailed. It fitted our room perfectly.
One thing i have to ad.
I never stood under the impression, that the HS8 are bad speakers but hearing those against the eve it was night and day. We keep the HS8 as reference but you will never go back once you heard the difference side by side in an AB test.
although im sure there are monitoring systems far far better still, i am very sure i will be happy for a long long time with the sc305 they give me confidence while mixing, where the HS8 left me qith a questionmark.
