Sound Radix Surfer EQ 2

Ich arbeite seit 10 Jahren als professioneller Mixing-Engineer und Musikproduzent und bei fast jeder Produktion gibt es immer wieder Probleme mit Maksing oder einfach fehlendem Druck (gerade beim Bass).

Was ich ein Jahrzehnt nun machen musste, waren Automationen schreiben für die EQ?s die ich gerne angehoben oder abgesenkt haben möchte. Wie jeder weiß, ist das unter Umständen ein sehr zeitaufwändiger Prozess der immer gleich abläuft.
Loopen einer bestimmten Sequenz Eq einstellen, weiter zu nächsten Sequenz und so weiter.
Mit diesem Surfer EQ 2 ist das nun eine ganz andere Sache.

Ich lud in auf den Bass-Channel und fing an am Surfer EQ die üblichen verdächtigen einzustellen.
- 350-700 Hz etwas raus wegen dem Matsch der den Bass muffig macht.
- 2-2,5 KHz angehoben für die Präsenz und die Saiten
- 1 KHz etwas angehoben für den wie man sagt Cut through the mix Effekt.

Hierbei war schon sehr angetan wie der Surfer EQ das umsetzt.
Ich habe die die Q Kurve und alles andere in der Default Einstellung gelassen.
Die Eq?s verhalten sich sehr hochwertig, hören sich natürlich und transparent an.
Der typische Sound den man von anderen Herstellern oft kennt das sich die Signale schnell überprozessiert anhören bleibt völlig aus. Tausend Daumen Hoch.

Nun aber zu wichtigen Frequenz am Bass und wie der Ablauf sonst war.
Üblicherweise muss man beim Bass hier anfangen zu automatisieren da einigen Noten druckvoll und klar zu hören sind und andere, da sie auf höheren Lagen gegriffen werden, verlieren deutlich an Power. Wie man sich denken kann ist das ein riesen Haufen Arbeit der da auf einen Wartet und man fängt schon fast laut zu fluchen an :-D

Aber beim Surfer EQ gibt es einen Surf Button in jeden der 7 Filter, wenn man die HP und LP Filter mitzählt, der nur darauf wartet euch diesen Haufen Arbeit in wirklich nur ca. 2-3 Sekunden abzunehmen :-D
Ich stellte den Tiefsten Eq auf Surf und wählte Frequenz basierend auf der Tonart an die der Bass da gerade Spielt und schwups ... fertig
Er passt bei jeder Note zu 100% perfekt den Eq basierend auf der Threshould an.
Der Bass kommt in jeder Lage super druckvoll an.
Ich war begeistert. In so kurzer Zeit, also so lange, wie man braucht um die Frequenz zu finden war ich fertig. WOW

Im unteren Bereich des UI befinden sich auch die Einstellungen für den Surfboy :-D
Pitch-Threshould und Tolerance, Surf time und Attack und Recoverytime. Damit könnt ihr den Surfer steuern und ihm sagen wie hart oder weich, wie genau oder durchlässig und wie schnell und langsam.

FAZIT

Als Fazit kann ich nur sagen, hätte es den Surfer Eq 2 schon vor zehn jähren gegeben hätte ich mir viele Stunden an Arbeit bei jeden Projekt erspart was im Umkehrschluss ja auch bedeutet, das man für seine Arbeit effektiv mehr Geld bekommt da man ja weniger lange dran sitzt ;-) ... hahahaha

Nein ehrlich das Teil ist der Wahnsinn man hat unendlich viele Möglichkeiten die nur darauf warten entdeckt zu werden. Den Oberwellen Filter habe ich noch garnicht einmal angesprochen.
Er klingt super natürlich und transparent, Die Signale erfahren eine deutliche Aufwertung durch den Surfer Eq.
Und das User Interface ist so simpel das man eigentlich noch nicht mal das Manual braucht. Alles ist klar verständlich und hörbar auch mit wenigen db?s an Bearbeitung.

Das ist nicht nur eine Kaufempfehlung das ist vielmehr eine Aufforderung. Leute holt euch dieses Teil denn das schießt echt den Vogel ab.

I gave in to temptation and bought this EQ after hearing various online guru's gushing about how uniquely novel it was, how it does what no other EQ can do, which is true, in part.
It's usual function is as a boost EQ, for emphasising certain mono signals, such as vocal, bass, lead guitar and synth lines etc, to stand out from the rest of the mix by boosting odd or even harmonics and the fundamental frequencies by means of a pitch correlation function that moves up and down the frequency spectrum with the audio, boosting whatever notes are passing through it. It works reasonably well in its default setting, but some signals can prove to be troublesome to get a 'Lock On', meaning adjusting the threshold and sensitivity are necessary. I find that using the High Pass filter to tailor the lowest frequencies of the signal can help in this regard.
As a general eq it is very good indeed, I particularly like the centre bands 'Harmonic' settings for making tracks jump from the mix, with varying degrees of severity. The normal bands are very 'Musical' in that they can be boosted or cut heavily without sounding over processed.
Graphically, the GUI is very good, the frequency spectrum works well to confirm what is going on with any alterations made, while its overall look is that of a quality tool.
'Pro's' are its quality sound, ease of use, great look with informative feedback. The Surf function is generally excellent and will make your affected tracks really stand out.
It's few 'Cons' are that it is expensive, (come on Soundradix, offer more in the way of sales and discounts!), Surf Mode only treats monophonic signals (though the plugin can be used on any signal in non-surf mode as a general EQ), it occasionally glitches with certain audio tracks and it has a very 'niche' functionality.
To conclude; I don't reach for this EQ every time, but when I do, I generally think I made a good choice. It occupies a very unique spot in the marketplace, works well, if not perfectly in its intended purpous. It would score four-and-a-half stars, if that were possible! Well done Soundradix, I look forward to trying their other products (maybe when they have a sale or some form of discount!) in the near future.

I had recorded a double bass for a track, and the bass had some resonances which needed tamed. I tried the usual techniques I use on bass guitar (multiband compression), but the resonances moved and changed with each different note being played. So I thought, maybe Surfer 2 EQ would work? It tracked the fundamental perfectly, so I could bring that under control, just using a small cut. The second harmonic made the bass sound wooly and boxy, so I tracked that and reduced by a few dB. I accentuated the 3rd harmonic to bring the bass out slightly and finally around 1.5khz a small boost to add snap to the notes. Once I did that, then using a multiband compressor to level out the volume worked perfectly and the bass finally fitted into the mix. I've so far used it on bass and vocals and it's fantastic, doesn't squash the dynamics, but allows you to control things. If you overdo it, it does produce artifacts, but I only use it with small dB cuts or boosts, which keeps artifacts to a minimum. It's going to be interesting seeing what other solo instruments this works well on. It's a plugin that works on solo instruments, because it can track their pitch. If you try to use it on polyphonic instruments it's not suited for that.
